Let there be a light in a darkened room
to spread hope and emotional warmth
to all that can see the flickering....
"We Must Do Better" by Becky Richardson
We look into your loving eyes
and years of companionship
and know we must do better.
We cannot let you down.
The intelligence you bring,
The loving thoughtful acceptance of
us and our inadequacies,
Needs us to do better.
Do better in your treatment and care,
Do better by your trust,
Do better for all the many ways you comfort and guard us.
We must keep our promise
By guiding your lives to make them
better.
You came and stood by our fires, eyes eager and accepting
You have given more than you have gotten,
We humans need to treat life better.
All life is sacred.
Human life is not alone in being worthy.
Other lives deserve better and must not be forgotten,
Your pleading eyes beseech us to do better.
I am surprised that you have been so patient.
We must speak up, take action and do better.
